The Age-Old Question

Does age matter?

DISCLAIMER: To read this post, you must open your mind; forget about your biases; forget about your personal beliefs; forget about what is legal/illegal. Also, please note that the following does not necessarily reflect my personal actions and does not condone illegal behaviour.*

My teenage second cousin, Robert (who I mentioned in the beginning of this post. He doesn't "Like" the page, anymore), inspired me to compose this little ditty.

♫ <a la Arlo Guthrie> This one goes out to my friends "Jill" and her much younger boyfriend, "Jer." It goes a little something like this... ♫

Earlier this week, Rob "shared" this photo on Facebook:

So it's pretty damn dramatised and exaggerated, but so fuckin' what?! It's right!

Age is just a fuckin' number!

When two people are in love, they're in love — period. All that matters in a romantic relationship is chemistry. Society is obsessed with age limits. I blame governments. They are obsessed with telling us what we can and can't do before certain ages. They think that they're the parents of the people. It may sound like a load of hippy, radical, fuckin' bullshit — but admit it — it's sooooo fucking true!

Read the following in the voice of your least favourite politician, as if their scolding a child:

It is illegal to drink alcohol before a certain age; it is illegal to use tobacco before a certain age; it is illegal to modify your body, in any way, before a certain age; it is illegal to VOTE before a certain age, even though they teach you about politics in school, before you are the legal age to vote; you cannot get married before a certain age; it is illegal to view and/or be a part of pornography before a certain age; it's wrong to have sex, with someone as old as you, before a certain age; it is illegal to have sexual relations with someone younger than a certain age.....

I think you see where I'm going with this.

I'm going to write this as best as I can to show you that governments are kinda controlling how we view relationships.

Let's ease in to it...

My two friends, who I previously mentioned, have a calendar age gap of about 15-20 years. Right now, you might be thinking, "Eww.. That's fucking gross!" What did I just tell you in the disclaimer? Forget about your fuckin' biases, and open your fuckin' mind!!!

So how? How is it "fucking gross?" I asked my sister this question (though she didn't say"eww," nor "fucking"), and all she could say is: "It just is."

"How?" I asked.

She replied, "Because it just is."

You get the gist. All that matters is that they're in love right now. They're romantically compatible!

Even if they were not in love, and it was only a sexual relationship, so what?! It just means that they're sexually compatible. Calendar age does not determine sexual compatibility, nor does it determine romantic compatibility.

Maybe if I show you a clip, with Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep, you'll see that age doesn't matter. After all, Uma and Meryl are high class celebrities, and we should always listen to high class celebrities — especially Meryl Streep!

This is the trailer for the romantic comedy, Prime (2005)

Now, let's take things a little further — a little more controversial. Let's stay with the idea of sex, for a bit...

Let's talk about "minors" having sex with each other. The word "minor" is a legal word. It is a word that governments use to restrict people of certain ages from doing certain things.

Let's say "Brian" and "Breanna" are two "minors," living in California. California law says that it is illegal for two "minors" to have sex. Do you see the Catch-22, though?

If "A Minor" accuses "B Minor" of rape, "A Minor" is incriminating his/herself (a little pun for those who are musically inclined).

A "minor" in California is anyone under 18. "Breanna" is 17 and a Senior in high school. "Brian" is 14 and a Freshman in high school. They have consensual sex together.

What's your reaction? "Fuckin' eww," again?

WHY?! They wanted to have sex with each other, they had sex with each other, so why is it a problem? After all, they're both sexually mature and have gone through sex education classes! Age is just a fuckin' number!

Now, what if we switched the ages and genders around? "Brian" being 17, and "Breanna" being 14. It's still consensual, but I bet you think it's even worse, right?

Why do you think it's worse? You're probably thinking, "He manipulated her." Here is where I ask you: "How do you know he manipulated her? How do you know she wasn't willing to begin with?"

YOU DON'T!!! Were you in his head? NO!

Who cares if either one is 17 and the other is 14?! Age is just a number, and it's only a three year age gap! My parents are FIVE years apart!!! Yeah, they weren't "minors" at the time of conceiving me (yeah my parents had sex, and so did yours; get over it), but they once were "minors."

And why can't two "minors" legally get married without parental consent? In some cultures the government has no say. The parents have full control!

"I think kids are very well capable of loving; it might not be love in its sexual or erotic sense, but I'm sure kids are very capable of really forming long-lasting, profound relationships with each other..." — Shahla Haeri; Director of Women's Studies, Boston University.

You'll see the rest of that quote later. For now.....

Here's where the disclaimer needs to be revisited...

*Let me remind you that this post does not necessarily reflect my personal actions and does not condone illegal behaviour.

"Minors" and "Adults" together. Let's start with a little comedic relief from Matthew McConaughey as "David Wooderson" in Dazed and Confused, about high school girls...

Now let's dive back in...

People don't seem to realise that the words "adult" and "minor" are legal terms.

In science, an "adult" is someone who's sexually mature. So let's talk sex...

In the following examples, I'm going to use myself and "a girl," instead of false names, just in case someone thinks I'm talking about them, for some god-forsaken reason.

While strictly talking about the scientific term of "adult," let's say I (hypothetically) have consensual sex with a 14 year old girl.

You can't call it rape, because it was consensual. It would only be rape if it was forced.

Age of Consent laws vary from state-to-state, country-to-country. Click here for the most accurate list I could find about the ages of consent around the world.

Now, I guess a 25 year old dating a 15 year old (in the USA) isn't illegal. They just can't legally have sex. But a lot of people will still say, "Fuckin' eww!"

My question to them is, "How is it 'fuckin' eww?"

And just like my sister, they'll answer, "It just is."

Here's that quote again — with the end intact (click it for an entire episode of National Geographic's "Taboo," about love, sex, and age):
"I think kids are very well capable of loving; it might not be love in its sexual or erotic sense, but I'm sure kids are very capable of really forming long-lasting, profound relationships with each other or with adults." — Shahla Haeri; Director of Women's Studies, Boston University.
Here are the first 15 minutes of the episode...

I need a cigarette...
